Book Review: “From Unincorporated Territory: Åmot” by Craig Santos Perez
Håfa adai! March is Mes Chamoru (Chamorro Month) on Guam, southernmost of the Mariana Islands. Whether we wake up every day in our archipelago or have become part of the diaspora in other parts of the world, this is an important time to celebrate our culture, heritage, history, and the perseverance of our people, from the time our ancestors arrived to our islands almost four thousand years ago to our family, friends, and neighbors today.
In March 2026, I will post reviews for books from Chamoru authors and/or depicting important stories from the Mariana Islands. My second selection for Mes Chamoru is From Unincorporated Territory: Åmot, a collection of poems by Craig Santos Perez.
This book review consists of two parts: a brief summary of content and my personal takeaways/overall rating. I may go into detail about some parts of the book, but I will leave out the greater nuance. I want to share my thoughts on the book and encourage you to purchase a copy of your own.
